Believe Me 03:52
BELIEVE ME talking to a friend of mine she was trying to fix a hole in my hat she told me it would be ok but I had to call bullshit on that you've been talking for an hour just like Nelson Rockefeller and I've been drawing a jetpack on the back of my hand and I've seen this river down but not like this before I can see you don't believe me but believe me 'cause I'm sure of course she told me I'd have trouble crossing over like a broken down four by four on the trail of Lewis and Clark now you're angry because I folded don't you know this deck is loaded at least that's what it felt like as I was walking away chorus talking about the Bulls and fools and all that shit that you like let's all act up together it's a goddamn loser strike heaven hold me doctor told me I can't worry 'cause the past controls me it's always the same there's no one to really blame and I've seen this river down but not like this before I can see you don't believe me but that just makes me more sure

THE HOUSE ON THE ROAD notice the tree coming out of the land reaching up towards the sky like an apple for a hand the sky is a giant spoon turned upside down never shine your silver when the guests are around the house on the road is making me laugh it looks so grumpy and silent that I want to take a photograph how many gentlemen have worked this hard? how many dogs are buried back in the yard big white car driving right on by blind as a horse with a blanket over his eyes where is the rider man with the tinted glass in his hand? he's making a toast to the new owners of the old land he's making a toast to the new owners of the old land so notice the tree coming out of the land reaching up towards the sky like an apple for a hand the sky is a silver spoon flipped upside down you should never shine the silver when the guests are around

TROLL FOR YOU these boots look just like battleships on a sea of old potato chips this couch it smells like cigarettes and food my hands are giant lobster claws that long to touch that hair of yours but I don't even dare make a move my legs are longer than a street the birds keep thinking I'm a tree did you ever wonder how a monster fells? to see a girl so beautiful so perfect and untouchable so young, yet so genteel I'm a troll for you watching your every move I'm so rough and rude you're so pretty and smooth I'm in love with you what am I going to do? I'm a troll for you what am I going to do? I picture you on saturdays you clean your house in every way dressed only in your underwear and saddle-shoes with arms of satin legs of silk and breasts that look like bowls of milk I can't help having bad thoughts when I do I'm a troll for you watching your every move I'm so rough and rude you're so pretty and smooth if my eyes had hands you'd feel the heat between your legs and on those pretty feet I'm a troll for you I may be a troll but I'm no fool I'm going to find a way to you I can't wait for fairy tales that don't come true I'll come to your house in a fit and tear the roof right off of it and take you like all the other monsters do I'm a troll for you watching your every move I'm so rough and rude you're so pretty and smooth I'm in love with you what am I going to do? I'm a troll for you what am I going to do? if my eyes had hands you'd feel the heat between your legs and on those pretty feet I'm sorry I'm a troll for you

100 Years of Waiting To the man who is an island every shore is reverent he sees the bridges standing as monuments to planning 100 years of waiting are hanging on the chain link the ferry used to cross here in the shadow of this structure and when the monster grows the fossil knows and the carpet shows the only way to bed is just what she said and the lovers in the stocking caps have disappeared into the gap ahead or something like that to the man who is an island every shore is reverent he sees the bridges standing as monuments to planning and when the monster grows the fossil knows and the carpet shows the only way to bed is just what she said and the lovers in the stocking caps have disappeared into the gap ahead or something like that

Three Way Valentine a broken leg in a diamond mine a three way valentine the typical story line I wake I walk I whine and every time you walk on by a little death and a little life it's all I'm going to get tonight but that's alright because in the face of it all two eyes a nose and a mouth a paperback of the fall it's better than nothing at all and even though I know you're out there running around town I can't help hoping that you'll speak my name when those assholes let you down rolling over on my back burning red beans to black a self-styled heart attack all for what but what the heck? and in the face of it all two eyes a nose and a mouth a paperback of the fall it's better than nothing at all I count my blessings behind my back and stir my drink with the straw that broke the camel's back and even though I know you're out there running around town I can't help hoping that you'll speak my name when those bastards let you down and in the face of it all two eyes a nose and a mouth a paperback of the fall it's better than nothing at all

The Headless Horseman's Head he's reading Baudelaire with white racehorse eyes no matter what she says I'm home a lot these days with cauliflower ears talking fables and lies no mater what she says I'm home a lot these days I'm home a lot these days wasting valuable time and if you want to come over that would be fine the city sleeps tonight wrapped in the hair on his head no matter what she says I'm home a lot these days he's writing novels up in the sky like the headless horseman's head no matter what she says I'm home a lot these days and if you want to come over that would be fine

Emily's Song 01:54
Emily's Song she was know to hold a pocket full of posies that's what I heard and I would follow her like Mary's lamb in the stories that you heard and even when the wind came howling down blowing shopping bags all over the town and even when the branched were laid bare the girl I meant to please was looking up at the trees about then I decided not to fight it and chase her around I built a tree house made of Duncan Donut signs sixty feet from the ground and now the birds have shown her the door to my little house in the old sycamore and Emily Dickenson would be grateful for what I've done

Heart of Stone there've been so many girls that I've known I've made so many cry, and still I wonder why here comes that little girl I see her walking down the street she's all by herself trying so hard to please but she'll never break never, never break, never break this heart of stone this heart of stone what's different about her I don't really know because no matter how hard I try I just can't make her cry but she'll never break never, never break, never break this heart of stone this heart of stone so don't go looking that same old way if you try acting sad, you'll only make me glad you better listen little girl you better go walking on down the street I ain't got no love I ain't the kind that you want to meet but she'll never break never, never break, never break this heart of stone this heart of stone

The Thief 03:17
The Thief since seeing her in the hallway sledgehammers in her eyes I had a little ankle problem and it lasted for a while she took the stage like a burglar stealing everything in sight I felt a little draft from my shirt blow into the night and before I noticed it was gone, so was she never going to let that goddamn silvertone anywhere near me and before I noticed it was gone, so was she never going to let that goddamn silvertone anywhere near me

This Maid of Mine some people tell me I've got it made and I believe it's true I guess that I should not complain and yet I do her legs are like a river that flows beneath the hill and runs into the secret sea on which I sail and on this grey memorial when the sun forgets to shine she'll be flying in from Paris France this maid of mine this maid of mine this hourglass shaped like a heart and the shovel like a spade and when you die they dig a hole of what you're, from what you're of which you're made she's looking out the window now imagine what she sees and ocean that is waiting for everything and on this grey memorial when the sun forgets to shine she'll be flying in from Paris this maid of mine this maid of mine

Hello Dolly 03:27
Hello Dolly the lone coyote pads across the desert past the empty cans of chili that he's seen before the mice and moles all gather around and form a cheering gauntlet that's five miles long hello dolly, I'm coming home hello dolly, I'm coming home the sand and wind salute and I don't know but even the sound of emptiness is hopeful now the girls in dresses and the ancient men they're lining up to seize upon his trembling hand hello dolly, I'm coming home hello dolly, I'm coming home I'm going to take this bag I'm toting full of wanting and hoping and set it on your porch and come in this road it shines and sparkles but only runs in circles there's only one place I want to be in the lone coyote pads across the desert past the empty cans of chili that he's seen before the mice and moles all gather around and form a cheering gauntlet that's five miles long hello dolly, I'm coming home hello dolly, I'm coming home

about

The Scholars originally consisted of Whiting Tennis on guitar and Nathan Johnson on drums, and played a few times in an art studio in Dumbo Brooklyn. The goal was to play exclusively in libraries. A band was formed later playing some of this material with John Devore on drums, and Hiroshi Kimura and Pete Moe on bass. This CD was recorded in a practice room at ChopHouse Seattle, 1998 and 9, was mixed at Jupiter Studio by Martin Feveyear and self released on LandFall records.
