The city rides in dreams upon a soft pillow;
as if one whisper of her legendary height
in sleep proposes nothing of advantage
to an intercourse that crumbles

distantly, with solemn sentient of being,
this city desiring, falls in love with itself,
deadened by numbers taut expressions
appear nameless from subterranean scrawls

But when she wakes upon this weight
(for such anathema will not be done again)
and in the waking hour upon restraint

tames the wasted port and rubs the eye,
Whose cowl is a memory of night and drink;
some ridiculous dream!
Halfway over Brooklyn bridge!
